Stigma Keeps 2/3 Of Alcoholics From Treatment

According to findings in last month’s American Journal of Epidemiology, a study of 34,653 people, 6,309 of whom self-reported an alcohol disorder, has revealed that those who believe others will think less of them if they identify as alcoholics are only 1/3 as likely to seek treatment.  While this seems like a “duh” issue, it has never been documented empirically before.  The finding is expected to have implications for presentation of treatment alternatives.
