Types Of Detox

Types of Detox: Alcohol, Drug, Opioid & Substance Detox Programs

Choosing Sunrise Detox for medical detox services can be a life-changing step forward in your recovery journey. We offer proven treatments, comfortable accommodations, and a team of medical experts who can provide around-the-clock care to keep you comfortable.

What Is Detox and Why Does It Matter?

Detox is the process of slowly and carefully ridding your body of harmful substances before you begin comprehensive addiction treatment.

This first stage is critical because it prepares you physically for recovery, making sure your body is strong and healthy before you enter inpatient or outpatient rehab. While many people attempt this step on their own, it’s always best to detox under the supervision of a professional medical team.

The experts at Sunrise Detox are trained and experienced in every aspect of withdrawal management, and will walk you through each stage. They can also intervene as necessary to manage your symptoms and prevent dangerous outcomes.

When you’re ready to detox, we’re here to help. We offer several types of detox to meet you right where you are, including programs for alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids, stimulants, and more.

How Sunrise Detox Approaches Personalized Detox

The first step in our process is a thorough assessment of your current medical condition and addiction history. We’ll also ask if you’ve attempted to detox in the past, and how that experience went.

This confidential conversation gives us a clear idea of where you’re starting from and what you need. We’ll use the information gathered during this time together to create an individualized treatment plan just for you.

Throughout your treatment, we’ll closely monitor your vital signs, providing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as needed to alleviate pain, control cravings, and lower your risk of relapse during withdrawal.

Types of Detox Programs

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to detox that applies to every individual or addictive substance. Rather, we tailor our medical detox programs to fit your individual needs, keeping you safe and comfortable throughout the entire journey.

Alcohol Detox

Our alcohol detox program is designed for individuals who have become dependent on alcohol and are ready to break free

Some of the signs of alcohol dependency include an inability to live without drinking or to stop using on your own. If you continue to drink despite the negative effects that alcohol has on your life, or your loved ones believe you need to seek treatment for alcohol use, these could also be signs of an alcohol use disorder (AUD).

Most people complete our alcohol detox program in about 10 days, though others may need to stay for longer. Some of the withdrawal symptoms you may experience during this time include:

  • Appetite loss
  • Nausea
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Confusion
  • Heart palpitations
  • Depression
  • Body temperature changes
  • Sweating

Severe withdrawal symptoms can lead to a condition known as delirium tremens. This can cause life-threatening complications such as hallucinations, extreme confusion, fever, and seizures. Detoxing in a safe, supervised facility like Sunrise Detox greatly lowers this risk and ensures your safety at all times.

Opioid and Opiate Detox

Opiates are naturally derived from the opium poppy plant, while opioids can be synthetic and semi-synthetic. Some of the most common drugs in this category include heroin, oxycodone, methadone, and fentanyl.

Drugs in this category can be highly addictive, and stopping them can trigger withdrawal symptoms almost immediately. Our opioid detox program can help you taper off them safely. Most people complete this program in one week to 10 days, enjoying our comfortable accommodations and well-appointed social areas when not in treatment.

Opioid withdrawal often triggers flu-like symptoms. Some of the side effects you may experience include:

  • Hot and cold flashes
  • Body aches
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • Tremors

We provide medically supervised care at all times of day and night. If your care team determines that MAT services are appropriate, we can administer Suboxone to improve your comfort. This medication helps individuals taper off opioids and is less addictive than many other treatment drugs.

When you’re ready to begin Suboxone treatment, we’ll begin by tracking your response to a test dose. Then, we’ll start your regimen and adjust your dosage as needed. Toward the end of your drug detox, we’ll slowly taper you off Suboxone. To minimize your symptoms, we can also administer other comfort medications, such as over-the-counter pain relievers and safe sleeping pills for insomnia.

Narcotics Detox

The term “narcotics” describes any drug that’s used non-medically to achieve a psychological or behavioral effect. These drugs can fall into several categories, including benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and opiates. They also include psychoactive drugs like ecstasy, LSD, and methamphetamine.

Our narcotics detox takes into account any co-occurring addictions that might be present, as these drugs are often taken in conjunction with other “party” drugs such as alcohol and cocaine. They may also be manufactured in unregulated labs and could contain dangerous additives.

As you withdraw from narcotics, you might notice the following symptoms:

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Constipation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Itchy skin

More serious symptoms include heart attack, stroke, and reduced kidney function. It’s critical to undergo narcotics detox under the careful guidance of a medical team.

Benzodiazepine Detox

Benzodiazepines are medications that depress the central nervous system (CNS). They have calming effects on the brain, so doctors often prescribe them to treat conditions such as anxiety, seizures, and insomnia. These medications have a high potential for abuse due to their addictive qualities.

Stopping benzos suddenly can result in painful and even life-threatening symptoms, including suicidal ideation. Our benzo detox program follows a strict tapering schedule to lower this risk. Some of the effects you may notice during detox include:

  • Disturbed sleep
  • Tension and anxiety
  • Hand tremors
  • Panic attacks
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Weight loss

This extended, medically controlled process is critical to helping you detox from benzos safely and securely. At Sunrise Detox, you’ll have a comfortable place to stay, delicious meals, and peer support as you go through this journey.

Stimulant Detox

Stimulants like cocaine, meth, and even prescription medications have the opposite effect of benzodiazepines. These substances increase the activity of your CNS, aiding in focus and concentration.

During stimulant detox, we’ll closely monitor your heart rate, providing controlled doses of Valium and similar medications to counter the effects of the stimulants in your bloodstream. We also focus on mitigating any emotional and psychological withdrawal symptoms you may experience, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Lethargy
  • Cravings
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis

Participating in our on-site therapy sessions can complement your stimulant detox, allowing you to explore your addiction on a deeper level and gain support from others as you recover.

Marijuana Detox

Though states continue to legalize marijuana medically and recreationally, using cannabis for an extended period of time could lead to serious health risks. Not only can it intensify pre-existing mental health conditions, but it can also raise the risk of psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and negatively affect your quality of life.

This is especially the case with synthetic cannabinoids, like Delta 8 THC or K2, which can carry even greater health risks. If you’ve been unable to stop using on your own, you might need a cannabis detox. Most people can remove this substance from their routine without major issues, but long-term users might experience the following mild physical effects:

  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Shakiness
  • Appetite loss

Beyond this, you may also develop more notable psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and irritability.

What to Expect During Detox at Sunrise

When you stay at our inpatient detox, you can expect a comfortable, semi-private bedroom with an attached bath, chef-prepared meals and snacks, and access to our modern, well-appointed lounges and game rooms. We also offer individual, group, and peer-led therapy as well as 12-step meetings, family counseling, and aftercare plan development.

Our 24-hour supervision ensures your safety, while our daily monitoring services keep your detox in check, allowing us to adjust your plan as needed to optimize your comfort. Throughout your stay, you’ll have access to the emotional and clinical support you need to feel your best.

Transitioning from Detox to Treatment

When you’ve completed your stay at our supervised detox facility, we’ll help you move forward in recovery through our aftercare planning process. We offer connections and referrals to inpatient or outpatient care at nearby facilities that can help you continue your recovery progress and achieve long-term sobriety.

This step is important because it helps you build on the momentum you’ve created at Sunrise Detox. While detox is a critical first step, it isn’t full-scale recovery. At rehab, you’ll learn more about substance use, understand the root of your addiction, and learn valuable coping mechanisms and life skills.

We can guide you through the kind of detox programs we offer and the treatment approach best-suited for your needs. We’ll discuss these options during your initial assessment, once we learn more about your health history, addiction, and recovery goals.

Detox timelines can vary from one client to the next. While most people complete our drug detox programs within one week to 10 days, others may need more time to completely withdraw, taper off medications, and progress to the next phase of recovery.

Addictions to several substances necessitate medical detox. These can include alcohol, opioids, opiates, narcotics, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and even marijuana. If you’ve become dependent on any of these drugs, our detox services can help you safely eliminate them from your body before you begin rehab.

No. While detox can be an important first stage of addiction treatment, it is not the same as rehab. In rehab, you’ll focus on exploring the mental, emotional, and behavioral aspects of your addiction to set the stage for continued recovery.

Detox focuses on removing harmful substances from your body and helping you overcome the physical side of withdrawal before you dive into the “why” of your substance use disorder.

No. We do not recommend detoxing at home. This step can lead to serious symptoms that require expert monitoring to ensure your safety. Attempting to perform it on your own can be both painful and dangerous, putting you at risk of significant complications.
